Weisman and McCoy’s alternate 1930s history serves as the setting for the show. The United States of America has collapsed during this divergent time period, and North American travelers now prefer to travel by air; Crimson Skies’ air piracy industry thrives as a result. Jordan Weisman stated that he wanted to “translate the idea of 16th century Caribbean piracy into a 1930s American setting” when explaining the concept of Crimson Skies.
